Magnesium ions (Mg2+) are essential for cells and are tightly regulated by a balance between uptake and efflux. I am analyzing the role of Cyclin M2 (CNNM2), a member of the CNNM family, which is a transporter for Mg2+ efflux from the cell to the extracellular space, using mice and C. elegans. My aim is to elucidate the effects of disrupting Mg2+ homeostasis at the cellular and organismal level by suppressing CNNM2, as well as the mechanisms underlying the development of pathologies resulting from this disruption.
